Bee Aware: Common Childhood Illnesses Every Parent Should Recognize

Every parent knows the sound of a sniffle or the sight of a flushed face can send worry buzzing through the hive. While most childhood illnesses are common and treatable, knowing the signs can help you decide when to care for your little honey bee at home and when it’s time to call Dr. Diaz-Ochu.

Here are a few of the most frequent childhood illnesses and what parents should look for:

Ear Infections

  • What to Watch For: Tugging at ears, trouble sleeping, fussiness, fever, or fluid draining from the ear.
  • Bee Tip: Many ear infections follow a cold. If pain lasts more than a day or your child has a fever over 102°F, it’s time for a checkup.

Strep Throat

  • What to Watch For: Sore throat, painful swallowing, red or swollen tonsils, and fever. Unlike colds, strep usually doesn’t come with a runny nose.
  • Bee Tip: Strep requires antibiotics, so don’t wait it out. A quick test in the office can confirm it.

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)

  • What to Watch For: Cold-like symptoms, coughing, wheezing, and in infants—trouble breathing, poor feeding, or unusual sleepiness.
  • Bee Tip: RSV can be serious in babies and young children. Call right away if your child has labored breathing, bluish lips, or dehydration signs.

The “When to Call” Checklist

Call your pediatrician if your child has:

  • High fever (over 102°F in older kids, or any fever in infants under 2 months)
  • Labored or noisy breathing
  • Persistent vomiting or diarrhea
  • Extreme fatigue or unusual drowsiness
  • Pain that doesn’t improve with comfort measures

Dr. Diaz-Ochu’s Parent Tip

“Trust your instincts—parents often notice the first sign that something’s not quite right. It’s always better to check in than to wait and worry.”
