Summer is a season for sunshine, playtime, and sweet family memories—but it can also bring a hive full of hazards for your little ones. From backyard stings to playground tumbles, even the most playful activities can lead to injuries if we’re not careful. At BeeHome Pediatrics, we believe that a little preparation goes a long way in keeping your honey bees safe all summer long.
Here are some tips to help you bee proactive when it comes to summer safety:
1. Mind the Hive: Create Safe Play Spaces
Make sure your backyard or play area is free of potential dangers like exposed nails, broken fences, sharp garden tools, or standing water. Supervise younger bees during outdoor activities and check play structures for wear and tear before use.
2. Protect Against Sunburn and Heat Sting
Bees love the sun, but too much heat can make them wilt. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen before heading outdoors and reapply every 2 hours—or more often after swimming or sweating. Keep children hydrated with water or electrolyte-rich fluids, and take breaks in the shade when the heat index climbs.
3. Splash Safely
Whether your child is playing in a backyard pool, splash pad, or lake, constant supervision is the golden rule. Drowning can happen silently and quickly. Enroll your child in swim lessons, and ensure they wear coast guard-approved floatation devices when near water.
4. Gear Up for Adventure
Helmets are a must for all biking, scootering, and skating activities—no matter the distance or age. Teach your kids that safety gear isn’t optional; it’s part of the fun! Make sure helmets fit snugly and are worn properly every time.
5. Bee Cautious Around Bugs
Insect stings and bites are common in the summer. Dress your child in light-colored clothing and avoid scented lotions or shampoos that attract bugs. For children with known bee allergies, always keep an epinephrine auto-injector nearby and know how to use it.
6. Fireworks Are Not Toys
It may be tempting to let kids hold sparklers or light small fireworks, but these can cause serious burns or injuries. Leave the pyrotechnics to the pros, and enjoy fireworks shows from a safe distance.
