Buzzing Through Summer: How to Protect Your Kids from Heat and Bugs

Summer is here, and it’s time for sunshine, sandy beaches, and outdoor adventures! But as every beekeeper knows, too much sun and heat can be tough on our little honey bees. Whether your kids are splashing at the pool, building sandcastles, or chasing fireflies, keeping them safe and healthy should be at the top of your summer checklist.

Here’s how to protect your buzzing bunch from the summer heat and keep pesky diseases at bay:

Sun Safety for Shiny Wings

Our honey bees love to fly freely, but strong sun can sting — just like it can sting tender skin. Protect your kids with:

  • Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating.
  • Shade: Encourage play breaks under umbrellas, trees, or tents.
  • Protective Clothing: Lightweight, long-sleeved shirts and hats can shield delicate skin from UV rays.

Hydration: Nectar for the Body

Just like bees need water to make honey, your kids need plenty of fluids to stay energized and avoid heat exhaustion. Keep water bottles handy and remind them to sip often, especially during active play.

Bug Bite Prevention

Summer means bugs, and while some might just be a nuisance, others can carry diseases. Here’s how to keep those buzzing pests away:

  • Use insect repellent safe for children.
  • Avoid standing water where mosquitoes breed.
  • Dress kids in light-colored clothing with long sleeves during dusk and dawn when bugs are most active.

Beach & Water Safety

Summer fun often means water — pools, lakes, and beaches! Keep your little bees safe with these tips:

  • Always supervise swimming and use proper flotation devices.
  • Teach kids about water safety rules.
  • Rinse off salt and chlorine after swimming to protect skin.

Watch for Signs of Heat-Related Illness

Heat cramps, exhaustion, or worse can sneak up quickly. Look for signs like dizziness, headache, nausea, or excessive fatigue. If your child shows symptoms, get them to a cool place, hydrate, and seek medical help if needed.
