Just like every bee in the hive has its own role and rhythm, every child develops at their own pace. But sometimes, a little one might need extra support to reach their milestones—and that’s okay! At BeeHome Pediatrics, Dr. Margie Diaz-Ochu is here to guide families in Salt Lake City through understanding developmental milestones and recognizing when it may be time to seek a helping hand.
What Are Developmental Milestones?
Developmental milestones are the skills and abilities children typically achieve by a certain age, such as rolling over, saying their first words, or walking. These milestones fall into four key areas:
- Motor Skills (sitting, crawling, walking, holding objects)
- Language and Communication (babbling, speaking, responding to sounds)
- Social and Emotional Skills (smiling, making eye contact, playing with others)
- Cognitive Skills (problem-solving, following directions, recognizing people and objects)
Signs That May Signal a Delay
Missing a single milestone isn’t always cause for concern, but a pattern of delays might be. Some common signs to watch for include:
- Not smiling by 3 months
- Not babbling or cooing by 6 months
- Not sitting without help by 9 months
- No single words by 15–18 months
- Not walking by 18 months
- Lack of eye contact or response to name
- Trouble with coordination or muscle stiffness
- Not pointing, waving, or using gestures by 12–15 months
Trust Your Instincts—They’re as Sweet as Honey
You know your little bee best. If something feels off, it’s okay to ask questions. Early intervention can make a world of difference. The sooner a concern is identified, the sooner your child can receive the support they need to thrive.
How BeeHome Pediatrics Can Help
At BeeHome Pediatrics, Dr. Diaz-Ochu provides thorough developmental screenings during well-child visits and upon parental request. If a concern arises, we’ll work closely with you to coordinate further evaluations or referrals—whether that’s speech therapy, occupational therapy, or early intervention services.
We also offer behavioral health assessments for children who may be experiencing challenges in communication, social interaction, or emotional regulation.
Keep Your Hive Connected
It’s important for caregivers, daycare providers, and teachers to communicate and share observations. Development happens in all environments—not just at the doctor’s office—so hearing from multiple members of your child’s hive can be very helpful in understanding their progress.
