Stings and Scrapes: When to Treat at Home and When to See the Doctor

Bee stings, scraped knees, and bumps are all part of childhood adventures. Whether it’s climbing a tree, riding a bike, or exploring the backyard, kids are bound to collect a few “battle scars” along the way. The good news? Most minor injuries can be safely handled at home. But sometimes, a scrape or sting needs more than just a parent’s touch—it may require a trip to the doctor.

Dr. Margie Diaz-Ochu at BeeHome Pediatrics shares practical tips to help parents know when to buzz in for help.

Treating Minor Scrapes and Cuts at Home

For everyday playground mishaps:

  1. Wash hands first to prevent infection.
  2. Clean the wound gently with mild soap and water.
  3. Apply an antiseptic to reduce the risk of germs.
  4. Cover with a clean bandage—especially if your child is heading back outside.
  5. Change the bandage daily or if it gets dirty or wet.

Most small scrapes will heal on their own in a few days with a little TLC.

Bug Bites and Bee Stings

  • For mild stings: Remove the stinger (scrape it off, don’t squeeze), wash the area, and apply a cold compress.
  • For itchy bites: Use calamine lotion or a cool cloth to soothe irritation.
  • Watch for allergies: Seek immediate care if your child has swelling of the face, lips, or throat, or trouble breathing.

When to Call the Doctor

Head to BeeHome Pediatrics (or urgent care) if:

  • A cut is deep, gaping, or won’t stop bleeding after 10 minutes of pressure.
  • A scrape looks red, swollen, or filled with pus (possible infection).
  • The injury is near the eyes or face.
  • Your child hasn’t had a tetanus shot in the last 5 years.
  • A sting triggers severe allergic reactions (anaphylaxis).

Dr. Diaz-Ochu’s Parent Tip

“Don’t panic over small scrapes—kids heal quickly! But trust your instincts. If something doesn’t look right, it’s always better to call your pediatrician and ask.”
