At BeeHome Pediatrics, we know that when your little ones start feeling under the weather, it can be tough to tell whether it’s something minor or something more serious. Strep throat is one of those conditions that can sneak up on your honeybee and leave them feeling miserable. But don’t worry—we’re here to help you identify the signs of strep throat and know when to seek care.
What is Strep Throat?
Strep throat is a bacterial infection caused by Group A Streptococcus bacteria. It’s more common in school-age children, but babies, toddlers, and teens can get it too. Strep is contagious, so it can spread easily in places like daycares, schools, or anywhere your little one is around other kids.
Signs of Strep Throat in Babies, Toddlers, Kids, and Teens
Strep throat symptoms can vary depending on age, but they all come with a sore throat. Here’s what to watch for at different ages:
Babies (Under 1 Year)
Babies can’t always tell you exactly what’s bothering them, but they do show signs of discomfort. In babies, strep throat symptoms might include:
- Fussiness or irritability
- Refusing to eat or drink (because swallowing hurts)
- Fever (usually over 101°F)
- Red, inflamed throat (you might see this when checking their mouth)
- Swollen glands (in the neck area)
Since babies can’t always verbalize their symptoms, it’s important to be extra observant and call us if you notice any of these signs.
Toddlers (1-3 Years)
Toddlers may have a more difficult time explaining what’s wrong, but their behavior will usually tell you something’s up. Look out for:
- Sore throat (they might keep pointing to their throat or refuse to eat)
- Fever (again, usually over 101°F)
- Difficulty swallowing or drooling (this is due to the pain of swallowing)
- Rash (a condition called scarlet fever can sometimes accompany strep)
- Loss of appetite or irritability
If your toddler shows these signs, especially with a fever, it’s a good idea to give us a buzz!
Kids (4-12 Years)
Older kids can usually tell you their throat hurts, but you might see additional signs of strep, such as:
- Painful, red throat (sometimes with white patches or streaks of pus)
- Swollen, tender glands in the neck
- Fever (again, usually over 101°F)
- Headache or stomach ache (sometimes stomach pain is the first clue in kids)
- Rash (this can signal scarlet fever, which is a complication of strep)
If your child has a red throat and fever, call us right away. A strep test is quick and easy!
Teens (13-18 Years)
Teens might complain about a sore throat more than younger kids, but their symptoms are still similar:
- Severe sore throat (usually without coughing or runny nose)
- Fever
- Swollen neck glands
- Difficulty swallowing
- Headache, nausea, or abdominal pain
Teens are often in school, where strep spreads quickly, so if they’re showing these signs, it’s best to get them checked out.
How Do You Treat Strep Throat?
Strep throat is treated with antibiotics to help kill the bacteria and prevent complications like rheumatic fever or kidney problems. If your child is diagnosed with strep, be sure they complete the full course of antibiotics as prescribed.
In addition to antibiotics, there are a few ways to help your child feel more comfortable:
- Rest is important for their body to fight off the infection.
- Fluids are key—help your child drink lots of water, clear soups, or electrolyte drinks to stay hydrated.
- Pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help relieve pain and reduce fever.
- Saltwater gargles (for older kids) can help soothe their sore throat.
