The Sick-Day Question Every Parent Asks: When Should I Call the Pediatrician?

Your child has a fever. Maybe there’s a cough, a runny nose, or a sore throat too.

Now you’re wondering: Should I wait and see how they feel tomorrow, or should I call the pediatrician?

It’s one of the most common questions parents face, especially during fall and winter when colds, flu, and other illnesses start making their way through schools and daycare.

While many childhood illnesses can be managed at home, there are times when it’s important to check in with your child’s pediatrician.

Pay Attention to How Your Child Is Acting

A thermometer can give you useful information, but it’s not the only thing to consider.

Notice how your child is behaving. Are they drinking fluids? Are they reasonably alert and responsive? Are they interested in playing or interacting when their symptoms improve?

A child who is tired and uncomfortable while sick may still be doing okay. But significant changes in behavior, energy, or responsiveness can be a reason to contact their pediatrician.

Consider How Long Symptoms Have Lasted

Many common childhood illnesses improve with time.

If your child’s symptoms aren’t improving, are getting worse, or continue longer than you expected, it’s reasonable to reach out to their pediatrician.

You don’t have to wait until you’re completely certain something is wrong. If you’re concerned about how your child is progressing, a conversation with their doctor can help you decide what to do next.

Watch for Changes in Eating and Drinking

Illness can temporarily affect your child’s appetite. That’s common.

However, staying hydrated is important. Pay attention if your child is drinking significantly less than usual or you’re concerned that they’re not getting enough fluids.

For younger children especially, parents should pay attention to changes in feeding, wet diapers, and overall behavior.

Know When Symptoms Need More Attention

Certain symptoms deserve prompt medical attention. These can include significant trouble breathing, unusual difficulty waking or responding, signs of dehydration, severe or worsening pain, or a child who looks seriously ill.

If you’re ever worried about your child’s condition, don’t feel like you have to figure everything out on your own.

Trust Your Parenting Instincts

You know your child better than anyone.

Sometimes the most important clue is simply that your child doesn’t seem like themselves.

Parents don’t need to diagnose an illness before calling the pediatrician. That’s what your child’s healthcare provider is there for.

Having an established relationship with a pediatrician can make these decisions easier because your child’s doctor already knows their health history and can help you determine the appropriate next step.
