What to Expect in Your Baby’s First 30 Days: A Guide for New Parents

The first 30 days with your newborn can feel like the longest—and shortest—month of your life. You’re sleep-deprived, overflowing with love, and possibly overwhelmed with questions. At Bee Home Pediatrics, we’re here to help you feel confident and cared for every step of the way.

Here’s what to expect during your baby’s first month of life—from feeding and sleeping to important developmental milestones.

Feeding: It’s a Full-Time Job

In the early weeks, newborns eat frequently—about every 2 to 3 hours, including through the night. That’s 8 to 12 feedings a day.

  • Breastfeeding? Expect cluster feeding (when baby wants to nurse nonstop) and occasional fussiness. Keep hydrated, rest when you can, and don’t hesitate to reach out for lactation support.
  • Formula feeding? Start with 1.5 to 3 ounces every 3–4 hours, adjusting based on your baby’s hunger cues.

Pro tip: Watch for signs of adequate feeding like 6 or more wet diapers a day and consistent weight gain.

Sleep: Short and Often (But It Gets Better!)

Newborns sleep a lot—about 16 to 17 hours a day—but not in long stretches. Their tiny tummies mean they wake often to feed.

  • Don’t expect a set schedule yet.
  • Always place your baby on their back to sleep, on a firm, flat surface with no blankets or pillows.
  • Day/night confusion is normal. Try exposing your baby to natural light during the day and keeping nights calm and quiet.

Development: Tiny Changes, Big Milestones

Your baby may not do much just yet—but every snuggle and gaze is a building block for growth.

What to watch for in the first month:

  • Tracking with their eyes: Your baby may start to focus on your face or high-contrast patterns.
  • Reflexes: Rooting, sucking, and startle (Moro) reflexes are strong.
  • Crying: It’s their only way to communicate—but over time, you’ll start to recognize cries for hunger, tiredness, or comfort.

Tummy time (on a firm surface while supervised) is safe and important, even in the first weeks. Start with a few minutes a day.
